Spot versus flood work lights. When do you use which beam?

Klaas Peter van de Pol|5 minutes to read

We are in the middle of the season of where it gets dark early. With the right lighting it is still possible to work in the dark and at the same time have optimal visibility. Which work light is best suited to your work? This depends on what kind of work you do, what kind of area you need to illuminate and how big that area is. Based on these requirements, you can find the right work lights. But do you choose the flood, spot or combo work light? We tell you more about their characteristics and area of application so that you can always choose the right and suitable light beam.

Light illumination
It is important to know in advance where you want the light illumination. Do you want it far away, close by or both? The spot, flood and combo indicate the beam angle of a lamp, as you can see in the diagram below.

Spot lights and flood lights

The flood work light
The flood work light, also known as the wide beam, provides a wide beam to illuminate a large area at a short distance. This lamp is very useful, for example, when a good view of the field is required or for the operation of a machine. The wide-beam lamp is also suitable for slow-moving vehicles, because it illuminates the area around the vehicle, thus providing a good view of the surroundings. Even when colleagues are working around the vehicle, the wide-beam headlights are useful. The light in the environment provides extra visibility and therefore extra safety for you and your employees. In certain activities, such as earthmoving, it may be desirable to use special work lights with so-called indirect light. These lamps prevent glare when working close to the light source.

In addition, the number of lumens of the flood work light is also important. The more lumens the lamp has, the larger the illumination of the light is and therefore the larger the illuminated surface becomes. In addition, a high number of lumens can cause annoying reflections. Do you have any more questions about lumen? Then read our article: How to convert watts to lumens.

Light illumination of the flood work light and the spot work light

The spot work light
The spot work light has a narrow beam of light over a relatively large distance. Perfect when you need to be able to see far into the field and see what is happening in front of you. The spotlight is therefore also suitable for navigation in the field. The spotlight is also suitable for vehicles that drive faster, because obstacles in the distance can be seen earlier.

The combo work light
The combo work light is a light beam that combines both. The combo has a wide and a narrow beam in which the areas near and far are illuminated at the same time. The light illumination of the combo lamp can be seen in the image below. The centre of the light beam creates a relatively far view. The combo is in fact an innovative combination of the wide beam and the spotlight in one working light. Besides the fact that this lamp is very useful and gives a lot of light, it is also a cool work light to have.

Advantages of combo work lights:

  • Lots of light and therefore extra visibility
  • Increased safety
  • Two-in-one work light

When do you choose which lamp?
It all depends on your work and your preferences when deciding which work light best suits your task.

  • Is it important that you can see near and far at the same time? Then choose the combo work light.
  • Do you need to be able to see far away? Then choose the spot work light.
  • Do you need a lot of light close by? Then choose the flood work light.
